If you haven’t tried Prawn Juice, our very own beer, yet then you’re in for a treat this summer. A local drink created by a local brewery it’s the perfect taste of the South Hams… as the South Hams Brewery who made it will tell you!
What makes South Hams Brewery so special?
Simple - South Hams Brewery is all about “quality beer for quality people”… we love beer and the beer making process. The scent of the hops, the steam of the copper kettle and the natural science that goes into the combination of great ingredients to create our range of fantastic ales. We have been operating from our glorious Start Bay location for over 12 years - a family business that is dedicated to producing consistent, high quality, drinkable ales - just what beer lovers want for both the traditional and the more contemporary tastes!
The quality of our beers have been recognised with Silver Love The Flavour awards and the SIBA South West Gold Award for our extremely popular Wild Blonde Ale, which is our first venture into putting ‘real ale in a real can’. We see this as an important way of introducing our beers to new audiences and it’s a great eco way of supplying to festivals and other events – something that we are doing more of this year!
How did the idea for Prawn Juice come about?
Like all great ideas, it started with a chat about beer, over a glass or two! We are always looking for partners to work with to widen the reach of our ales and Luke is such a keen supporter and ‘drinker’ of our range, it seemed like the perfect partnership to link the Winking Prawn and its sister venues with its very own bespoke ale – a unique product that can only be found in that brilliant location - I mean, what could be better than a glass of the finest Prawn Juice and that view across the bay? It's such a refreshing drink, ideal for accompanying food in great company.
What makes Prawn Juice different to other beers?
Now, that is something we could never reveal… suffice to say there is ‘Nothing Fishy About This Beer!’
What do you love about working in the South West?
The South West is a fantastic place to live and work… the sea, the fabulous coastline, the rolling hills, the communities and the phenomenal range of local producers all showcasing great ideas and superb products. We are so lucky to be here, and having grown up in the area, really relish promoting all that is great about Devon.
What’s the perfect way to drink Prawn Juice?
A summer’s day, a tall glass, perhaps local crab salad, a good music playlist and plenty of friends around!

What’s South Hams Brewery’s top recommendations for things to do in the South Hams when you’re visiting or relaxing?
So many things… you’ve got to get in the sea, a spot of stand up paddle boarding or visit any of our beautiful beaches including North Sands of course! Enjoy the cliff top walks along the South West Coast Path or indulge at one of the many local food and drink festivals and wonderful places to eat - a glass or two of our quality ales are a good idea too – in fact, it would be rude not too!
